How to pick a paint color
A few simple rules make choosing paint far less overwhelming. Here's the same advice we give homeowners during a free color consultation.
Warm tones
Warm colors carry yellow, red, or brown undertones — creams, beiges, greige, terracotta and warm whites. They make a space feel cozy and welcoming, and they help balance north-facing rooms that only get cool, indirect light. Warm neutrals also sit naturally next to wood floors, brick and stone.
Try: Alabaster SW 7008, Accessible Beige SW 7036, Creamy SW 7012
Cool tones
Cool colors lean blue, green or violet — crisp whites, true grays, sage and navy. They read calm, clean and modern, and they make a room feel larger and airier. Cool shades shine in south- and west-facing rooms with plenty of warm sunlight, which keeps them from feeling cold or sterile.
Try: Repose Gray SW 7015, Sea Salt SW 6204, Naval SW 6244
Always test on your own walls
Paint sample squares on your walls at home and look at them in the morning, afternoon, and lamp light. A color can shift dramatically between lighting and rooms in the same house.
Start with what stays
Flooring, countertops, cabinets, brick and roofing all have undertones you can't change. Pick a paint color that agrees with those fixed finishes instead of fighting them.
Follow the 60-30-10 rule
Use one main color on about 60% of the space, a secondary tone on 30%, and a bold accent on the last 10% — a door, island or feature wall. It keeps a palette balanced.
